The Gray Langur is the Hamuman monkey. The Indian epic Ramayana tells how the langur rescued the Hindu monkey god Hanuman from a fire. This myth explains how the monkey’s face and hands were burned black. Recently, government officials in Delhi have employed the Langur to assist in their struggle to manage the problem of feral Rhesus monkeys in the city, hiring them to scare the smaller monkeys away from government buildings. When I got to Delhi I headed over to the government area to see this phenomenon for myself. There was a Gray Langur, a rope around his neck, tied to a low fence on the edge of the sidewalk. He sat on the fence, calm yet alert. Fortunately, I got some photographs before the police drove by and sternly reported that photography is strictly prohibited in government areas. They asked me for my camera but did not enforce the request, maybe because they were holding up traffic. I don’t usually take photographs in restricted areas, so this experience was my first encounter with police.
